Normal skin

Normal skin is in balance. It feels comfortable, doesn't get shiny quickly and rarely reacts to products. That doesn't mean care doesn't matter: a simple routine and daily sun protection keep it that way.

Sound familiar?

  • Your skin feels comfortable after washing, not tight.
  • Little shine during the day.
  • Small pores and the occasional spot.
  • New products rarely cause problems.

What causes it?

Normal skin is mostly down to genetics. Seasons, stress, sleep and hormones can make it temporarily drier or oilier. Simply adjust your routine for a while when that happens.

A simple routine

Morning

  1. Lukewarm water or a gentle cleanser.
  2. Optionally a serum with vitamin C or niacinamide.
  3. A light day cream.
  4. Sunscreen SPF 30 or higher, every day.

Evening

  1. Cleanse gently, especially if you wore make-up or sunscreen.
  2. A hydrating serum or night cream.
  3. Want something extra? Start slowly with retinol or a mild AHA.

Start with the basics and add new products one at a time. Give each product a few weeks before judging whether it works.

Ingredients that suit it

Best avoided

  • Layering lots of products 'because you can'.
  • Skipping sunscreen; sunlight is the biggest cause of skin ageing.
  • Trying a new trend every week.

See your GP if…

  • A mole or spot that changes in shape, colour or size.
  • A spot that won't heal or keeps bleeding.
  • Noticeable changes without an obvious reason.
