Oily skin

Oily skin makes more sebum than it needs. That causes shine and visible pores and can lead to blackheads or spots. The good news: oily skin needs moisture too, and drying it out usually only makes things worse.

Sound familiar?

  • Your face is shiny a few hours after washing, including your cheeks.
  • Pores are clearly visible, not just on your nose.
  • You regularly get blackheads or spots.
  • Make-up slides off or fades during the day.

What causes it?

Sebum production is mainly driven by genetics and hormones, which is why oily skin is so common during puberty. Warm, humid weather adds shine. Cleansing too harshly can actually dry out and irritate oily skin.

A simple routine

Morning

  1. A gentle gel cleanser, or just water if you cleanse well in the evening.
  2. A light serum with niacinamide.
  3. A light gel cream or fluid; 'oil-free' or 'non-comedogenic' on the label can help.
  4. Sunscreen SPF 30 or higher with a light, matte texture.

Evening

  1. Cleanse thoroughly but gently; with make-up or sunscreen, start with a cleansing oil or micellar water.
  2. Two to three times a week, a BHA (salicylic acid) to keep pores clear.
  3. A light, hydrating moisturiser.

Start with the basics and add new products one at a time. Give each product a few weeks before judging whether it works.

Ingredients that suit it

Best avoided

  • Products that sting or feel 'squeaky clean'.
  • Scrubbing every day.
  • Heavy oils and butters on areas with blackheads.
  • Picking or squeezing spots; it can leave scars.

See your GP if…

  • You have many inflamed spots or painful lumps under the skin.
  • Acne leaves dark marks or scars.
  • Normal care makes little or no difference after a few months.
